Purpose of Ergonomic Mice

Traditional mice were engineered and designed to be efficient relative to the entire desktop system. Until the development of the ergonomic mouse, the design of the human body did not influence the design.

Some ergonomic experts suggest throwing away the old design and going with the better ergonomic design of a thumbs up mouse.  These mice are in the handshake position.   This device is sometimes referred to as the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Mouse.  And as with most technology and workplace ergonomics, people are moving to less tethering.  So the WiFi Mouse is becoming more common.

Other ergonomic consultants advise, for the best possible results, to alternate pointing devices.  In other words, switching between the handshake mouse and one or more of the following.

Pointing Device Alternatives

Trackballs can reduce space to keep your hands in the ideal ergonomic range which means between the shoulders.  They also reduce stress placed on the index finger.

Touch Pads are the pointing devices you often see installed on laptops.  But they can also be added to a desktop configuration in lieu of the mouse.  Like trackballs, they can take up much less space.  Some come with a stylus to move the cursor, input text, and click buttons.

The Finger Mouse is the ultimate in miniaturization.  It’s a great idea, but often much too difficult to master.  However, there are a segment that will adopt and master them for both the ergonomic benefits and the “cool factor”.  However, due to the size of the pad, accuracy will likely be a problem for quite some time.
