Why Use an Ergonomic Office Chair?

The world is quickly evolving to an environment where people are in the sitting position more than ever. One hundred years ago, who would have believed that the majority of the U.S. population would sit while they work? The point is, there have been dramatic changes, to our routines, that affect our posture. Ergonomic chairs address this problem, but not everyone has adopted this posture aid.

The sitting position adds stress to the spine and all of its structure.  An ergonomic chair can both support the lower back, as well as help you adapt a more healthy sitting posture.  This allows you to sit in a balanced position, rather than developing a pressure hot spot to your spine and back.

What Features are Important in Ergonomic Office Chairs?

Seat Height – Your feet should be able to rest flat on the floor.  Your thighs and arms should be horizontal with the floor and desk.  A seat height range of 16” to 21” should work for most people.  And if more than one person will be using the chair, make sure it’s easily adjustable.

Seat Depth – The depth of a chair should be such that when you sit all the way back to the seat back, there should be 2” to 4” of space between the back of your knees and the chair.

Lumbar Support – As the spine curves inward (which is NOT supported by most non-ergonomic chairs), this is a VERY important feature.  Ergonomic chairs have adjustments for either/both height and depth of their natural or a healthy curve.

Backrest – The backrest should be able to adjust to fit the natural position of good posture.  To do this, it should be adjustable in both forward and back angles.  It should also be able to lock into place to limit the ability to recline.

Armrests – They must be adjustable.  The user should be able to sit with elbows rested and shoulders relaxed.

Swivel – Something so simple can be very important.  But the ability to turn, rather than reach for things at awkward angles, is very important.
