Maximizing Your Laptop Ergonomics

Wednesday October 12, 2011

Laptop in a coffee shopLaptops are amazing tools! They are compact and flexible, easy to take anywhere. But with all their benefits, laptops are not designed to be ergonomic. The guidelines for ergonomics call for a separated computer screen and keyboard. Using a laptop creates a trade-off between poor neck-head posture and poor hand-wrist posture. At your home or office, you can add ergonomic tools to improvement comfort; but you can also make your laptop more ergonomic while you travel.

Here are some tips to maximize your comfort and make your laptop more ergonomic:

In Your Office

  1. Raise your screen. If you don’t have a docking station, place your laptop on a desk or surface with the screen at eye level. This will allow for ergonomic posture for your neck and shoulders. If your desk seems too low, add a monitor shelf to achieve greater height.
  2. Use a separate keyboard. The ergonomically-designed, mini keyboards are a great choice. Most mini keyboards and many ergonomic mice are wireless; no messing with cables every time you sit down.
  3. Try a keyboard tray that allows for a negative-tilt, away from your body. The tray will provide the flexibility to maintain a neutral typing posture where the strain on your muscles is minimized. It also opens up your desk space for other uses.

On The Road

  1. Find a good chair. Look for a comfortable chair where you can lean back slightly, and where you back is well supported. If you need more support in you lower back, try a rolled towel or sweatshirt, or bring your own portable lumbar support.
  2. Place your laptop on your lap. This is the ergonomic compromise when using a laptop – good wrist posture or good neck posture? You are normally better off protecting the small muscles in your hands and wrists. With the computer on your lap, you can maintain a neutral wrist posture; find a good angle where you can keep your wrists straight and your hands and arms relaxed.
  3. Angle your laptop screen up as much as possible to minimize the strain on your neck. Just remember that in this position you will need to take frequent breaks to stretch your neck and shoulders.

While many of us enjoy the flexibility of laptops, they also increase concerns about ergonomics. For better comfort and faster typing, bring your own. Setting up your main work space with a mini keyboard or other  ergonomic keyboard and use an adjustable keyboard tray maximize your ergonomic posture. These guidelines can help you make good ergonomic choices while at home or on the road.

Ergonomics & Flying

Ergonomic Tips for Planes

Good ergonomic practices are not isolated to work behind a desk.  As worthwhile as it is to be intentional about neutral posturing while typing and even reaching for things you need, it is equally important to be intentional when out of the office.  Many of us fly frequently for work, or even for pleasure.  Either way, it's too easy to sit and/or move awkwardly for hours at a time, resulting in strain and even long-term injury if we're not careful.

I recently flew from the UK to TX with my 3 and 5 year olds.  I did it without my husband and while 7 months pregnant.  I guess the whole experience made me realize how important it is to be purposeful in how we spend our time even on airplanes.   Thus, whether you're alone on a puddle-jumper or a transatlantic flight with several preschoolers and one on the way, here are some tips for being more ergonomic and less injury-prone while flying.
  • Everybody wants the bulkhead seats because they're roomier. However, bulkhead seats are usually reserved for people with infants.  I will say that in my experience, planes usually have more seats than infants, so go ahead and ask for them.  It's best to call ahead and/or arrive early for the best seats.   After that, try for a seat on the aisle where you can stretch out your legs.
  • Bring a head rest pillow for rest and reading time.  It's not the same as a bed, but having neck support can definitely help you avoid neck strain.  Similarly, try portable back support.
  • Get up, stretch, and walk around.  I have flown soooo many times, but without my husband's help with the kids and being 29 weeks pregnant, I found that my circulation was terrible!  The result was pregnant-lady swollen ankles and feet!  I learned how useful it is to keep moving.  I also found that these stockings will help keep your circulation flowing.  regardless of your fertility, walking around will never hurt you.
  • Stay hydrated.  As nice as it is to enjoy sodas, coffees, and teas, try to at least match that consumption with water 1:1.  Drinking water is healthier and it keeps your body happier.
  • As is always true of good ergonomics, do not bend your body awkwardly.  This is hard to avoid all cramped up in an airplane seat, but do not bend, cock, twist, or angle any part of your body is an unnatural position.   be especially mindful of your back, neck, shoulders, and wrists, whether you're eating, sleeping, watching a movie, typing, gaming or just passing the time.

Practicing good ergonomics while flying will help alleviate and avoid back and neck pain.

Top 5 Favorite {Portable} Products

Here are my favorite portable, and even ergonomic, products.  Why portable, you ask?  Well, if it's good enough to have, it's good enough to have anywhere!  There's no point in loving something and not being able to have it on the road or when staying with friends or family, say for the holidays.

  • Travel Sound Machine.  Whether you're struggling to focus at work or just trying to get a good night of sleep on the road, a good sound machine can be just what you need.  I personally love mine for use at home- I both sleep and work form home, so it's handy to have a lightweight, portable machine I can plug in or battery-operate anytime anywhere.  It has proven helpful for our children as well when we're traveling or they share a room.  Like I said,  our travel sound machine is lightweight, very small, has 20 sound options, and comes with easy adapters for any country we can get to.
  • Portable lumbar support.  Once you've found great back support, why not be able to transport it to whatever chair you're using?  Your car, your office chair, your chair at home, an airplane seat, you name it.  Keeping your back in shape and not angry with you is essential.  Thus, having back support literally anywhere you go is priceless for those of us with achey backs.
  • iPad bundle.  iPads are awesome until you try to use them for long periods of time- they're just not that ergonomically friendly or comfortable to hold.  They really need a stand of some sort so you don't throw them out of frustration.  Why not make your incredibly portable iPad even better with ergonomically friendly and equally portable accessories such as a carrying case, a mount, and a mini keyboard.
  • Wireless mice and keyboards.  Once you're used to a specific keyboard, it's nice to have the advantage of using it all the time and not having to get used to something else while traveling.  Keep your favorite mouse and/or keyboard handy (pun intended) and comfortable wherever you are without the hassle of a cord.
  • Mobile stand.  A great mobile desktop you can use from any point in the classroom, conference room, or office.  Okay, okay, so maybe this isn't pocket-sized portability, but for those of us who have ever had to present things or teach from multiple classrooms, this is a fabulous resource for professional presentations and mobile work surfaces.

Portable products like wireless keyboards and travel sound machines can keep you in ergonomic style and comfort no matter where you are!

Why You Need a Portable Sound Machine

An Unlikely Ergonomic Luxury that is a Necessity

Ergonomics is more than being comfortable at work; it's using products and practicing principles that make life in general more comfortable.  That's why I'm taking the time to share an ergonomic products you might not necessarily think of when pondering what essentials you must have.  And, this item is definitely a must-have for anyone who has ever had noisy neighbors with or without a barking dog, hosted slumber parties, worked from home or in a loud cubicle {sorry is that was redundant}, lived on a busy street, or stayed in a less than 5-star hotel.  What is this glorious product that aids workers, parents, and travelers alike?  I present the portable sound machine in light of a recent experience in a noisy hotel.

Free Babysitting

It's essential to take advantage of visiting grandparents and steal a quick overnight trip for yourself- it's a win-win for everyone.  The kids are spoiled rotten, the grandparents are also in heaven, and the parents get to travel without factoring in kid-friendly activities at decent hours.  That's why when my mom came to visit us a few weeks ago, my husband and I decided to take advantage of free, familial babysitting and head to Edinburgh, which is only a 2-hour train ride for us.  We aren't made of money {as my husband jokes, he's not going to be the kind of doctor that helps people}, so we also booked an inexpensive hotel room and planned some great free sight-seeing and dining without kids.

Traveling with kids is a totally different experience than without them- we do love family trips, but every so often it's nice not to think through toys, diapers, and routine.  We didn't have to pack kid snacks, load up backpacks with tons of toys and DVDs, plan for nap times and bed times, or even kid-friendly restaurants.  We got to go where we wanted, when we wanted, and relish in the thought that our children were far from miserable without us.

Where's My Sound Machine?!

Did I mention we were on a budget?  Well, the "inexpensive" hotel room was well-priced for a reason: possibly the thinnest walls known to mankind.  Now I understand that my pregnant need for a nap at 3pm after jet-setting all day is not a normal thing- thus, when I kept waking up to children running up and down the halls from 3 to 5pm.  Fair enough.  {Though I did wonder where their parents were?!}

However, when people were still slamming doors and chatting in the hallways at 11 pm, I did not feel as gracious.  I had brought ear plugs, thinking that I would not need a sound machine since my own kids would not be stomping up and down two flights of stairs.  I'm not sure why I thought my kids were the only people who make noise when I'm trying to sleep.

However, in all honesty, all hotel patrons have the right to come and go as they please.  That's why I made a mental note to always bring my portable sound machine with me.  Always.  It's tiny, lightweight, and so effective against external noises like doors and footsteps.  Being able to sleep at a hotel is crucial- whether you're on vacation or business, a good night of sleep is a non-negotiable.  Also, go ahead and ask for a room that isn't on the street side, next to the elevator or snack machine, or a room that every other guest has to walk by to get to theirs.

Sleeping in an unfamiliar place can be challenging, especially if it's a noisy hotel.  Be prepared and pack a portable sound machine- you won't regret it.

5 Valentines Day Gifts You Might Never Think Of

Thursday February 10, 2011

Every year that dreaded day rolls around, the one where countless expectations go unmet and many a relationship wither away...you know it: Valentine's Day.  Possibly one of the most ingenious marketing ploys ever created, V-day serves as a reminder that we are expected to romance and woo our significant other while the whole world watches.  Even if you are lucky enough to have a girlfriend or husband who really doesn't care about this blessed event, she or he is surrounded by co-workers, if not friends, the very next day, all eager to hear what incredible gift they received or date the enjoyed.

You know what?  You don't have to play that game.  You're not here to please the masses or your wife's friends.  Your job is to show her that you love her.  Or, if you're a female, to show him that you love him.  There are a variety of ways to do this, none of which has to be embarrassing or exorbitantly expensive.  The best gift you can give is that of knowledge- of showing him/her how well you know them and how much you love them.

5 V-Day Gifts You've Never Thought Of

  • Flowers.  I know it's almost a cliche, but if you're just starting off, flowers are a sure bet, especially if you know her faves.  An alternative is a different flower every month- you buy 1 flower the 14th of the each month and hand deliver it yourself.  The trick here is to not look cheap- make sure you have a card that tells her this is a plan, and not a cop-out.
  • A massage.  Man and woman alike appreciate a good massage.  A dark room, total relaxation, and some nature sounds are sure to deliver one of the best gifts ever.  Plus, if you buy a half-hour massage or a head massage, you can still give an extravagant gift that has a smaller price tag.
  • Recreate your first date as best you can.  It's hard not to charm with a good memory and fondness for your shared experience.
  • Do something he or she has asked and you've always said no.  Maybe it's a chick flick, or a weekend away, or even time friends.  Whether it's with you or not (though it is V-day, being together is kind of the point), give your honey what they've always wanted.  It may be as simple as fixing the garbage disposal- just do it in love.
  • Your guy or gal not the romantic type?  Try an ergonomic gift- the practical ones love a useful gift that serves a purpose.  Why not warm their hearts and their hands?
The main idea in giving a great Valentine's Day gift is to be thoughtful enough to show your significant other that you love them enough to know exactly what they want, be it a different flower every month or a practical ergonomic gift.  Give the wrong thing and you've sent the wrong message.
