Finger Pain – Causes and Remedies

Pain in finger can occur due to various causes like Finger trauma ,broken finger,  Subungal hematoma ,Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Ulnar nerve disorder, Knuckle disorder , Arthritis, Gout, Bone Tumor, Scleroderma, Vasculitis, Embolism, Tendon sheath infection and Pulp space infection. Finger pain is an important sign for Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) and often associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Temporary numbness, tingling, or pain in extremities, can lead o chronic RSI.

Swelling in one or both the hands can occur due to nearly forty five causes including diseases and drug side effect causes. Some of the known causes include hand injury, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, Axillary vein thrombosis, Lymphedema, Pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, acromegaly and obesity. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common cause of such pain in finger or wrist with aching, burning, numbness, or tingling in palm, wrist, thumb, or fingers. The Pain sometimes extends up to elbow. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve gets compressed due to inflammation. Such swelling in can occur due to repetitive motion like typing on a computer, using a computer mouse, or playing tennis.

Burning sensation in hands and forearm occurs due to diabetes, peripheral artery disease, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral nerve trauma, nerve compression, brachial plexus injury and arm injury. Pain in finger can arise from a variety of causes and are often described as pins-and-needles pain, prickling or burning sensations called finger paresthesias. Finger pain can also be caused by a rare chronic skin condition characterized by the eruption of pustules that usually occur on the ends of fingers called Acrodermatitis or Arthritis inflammations, Arthritis related Enthesitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a condition called Dupuytren’s Contracture, where the layer of connective tissue under the skin of the palm of the hand thickens and shrinks causing the fingers to bend in to the palms, Gout, Paronychia and a rare syndrome characterized mainly by excessive hair growth, mental retardation and skeletal abnormalities called Wiedemann Oldigs Oppermann Syndrome. Diagnosis includes investigations for Carpal tunnel syndrome by tapping the volar aspect of the wrist (Tinel sign), Brachial plexus neuralgia and scalenus anticus syndrome by Adson tests and cervical spine disease by a roentgenogram. Treatment includes pain relief medications, use of Ergonomic devices and surgery in severe cases.

Numbness usually is a condition resulting from damage or disease of nerves often associated with abnormal pain-like sensations. Numbness can occur due to Paresthesias, Nerve injuries, Diabetic neuropathy, Peripheral vascular disease, Alcoholic Neuropathy, Frost bite and Leprosy. Knuckle pain is a feeling of distress caused by the stimulation of pain nerve endings in the knuckle. Knuckle pain could be due to Diabetes, Peripheral artery disease, Peripheral neuropathy and compression. Cramp is a painful spasm of muscles leading to pain. Use a mouse that requires no contact pressure to prevent cramps from overuse during the day.
