Laptops and Ergonomics – Solutions and Comfort

Laptops computers are a great portable can’t-do-without addition to our technological advances. Sadly, they’re not very ergonomic friendly on your lap or the top of your desk. In either position you’re usually looking down, straining your neck and upper body to use your laptop.

Looking down as well as hand and wrist placement using a laptop can cause neck, shoulder, forearm, and wrist pain.  Repeatedly placing your body in these positions places strain and stress on your upper body muscles, tendons, and nerves.  The result is constant aches and pains.

Whenever you’re using a laptop computer you want your upper body parts in a relaxed neutral position.  The goal is to place your laptop so your neck and  shoulders aren’t tense and tight as you use the computer.  You also want your forearms, wrists and hands in a non-stressed neutral position.  If you’re an experienced laptop user, you know just how difficult this may be to achieve.  Pillows, books, carrying cases and other items are often used in the attempt to find a comfortable position for the laptop.

In most cases the solution lies in placing the laptop on a higher than lap, desk, table, or other flat surface.  Office furniture suppliers now offer a laptop desk that’s made especially for laptop users.  With adjustability for height and its compact size and portability, it is a great solution for hot laps, aching necks and aching shoulders.
