Lumbar Support Pillows Help to Relieve Muscle Fatigue While Sitting

Back pain is one of the leading complaints of people seeking medical attention. The majority of pain is caused by muscle fatigue which leads to strains and sprains. Improper posture while sitting or standing leads to muscle fatigue. 

To understand what leads to back pain, it is helpful to understand the anatomy of the lower back. The back consists of the spine, which is made up of vertebrae, or back bones, which fully enclose the spinal cord. Between each vertebrae is a cartilage disc, which cushions the vertebrae and allow for movement and flexibility of the spine.  The spinal cord sends out branches of nerves at certain points between the vertebrae to provide the body with its nervous supply.

The spine is surrounded by muscles and ligaments. Long muscles run along both sides of the spine and down the spine. Bones are held together by ligaments, and small muscles run between the vertebrae. The muscles and ligaments support the back, along with abdominal muscles. It is when these muscles become fatigued that the back is vulnerable to strains or sprains (small tears in the tissue) leading to back pain. The low back, or lumbosacral area, is particularly vulnerable to this type of injury.

Causes & Treatment for Back Pain

Sitting for long periods of time, such as during long-distance car travel or at a desk job, can cause significant muscle fatigue. One way to combat injury is to take frequent breaks to walk around, stretch the lower back, or to change your posture. Another way is to make sure you sit properly. The feet should be firmly planted on the floor, and your back and neck should be erect, with the shoulders slightly dropped. If you use a computer your arms should be supported by the chair’s armrests.  To properly provide back support while seated a lumbar support pillow can be used.  They fit the natural curve in the lumbar back.
