The Renaissance™ Mouse is a new, ergonomically designed input device that helps reduce stress to the nerve in the carpal tunnel and to the muscles in the user's arm. It has also been shown in clinical trials to reduce discomfort for computer users.

Design

Unlike the traditional palm-down posture of most input devices, the "handshake" design of the Renaissance™ Mouse has been clinically proven to reduce the muscle strain and discomfort associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injury. Users can choose the size of the mouse most appropriate for their hand and can work both easily and comfortably for hours.

Studies:

Muscle electrical activity was recorded for several forearm muscles while mousing with both the Renaissance Mouse and traditional designs. The Renaissance Mouse was shown to significantly reduce the muscle effort required while mousing in addition to the more neutral posture. Consequently, the Renaissance Mouse design was shown to be less fatiguing to use than was the traditional design.

Right/Left Mouse Button

Cursor controls are executed by the thumb in a natural resting position. Conventional mice require flat pressure exerted by the outstretched middle finger and index finger. This is an unnatural position, causing heavy muscle strain on the forearm.

Why Use An Ergonomic Mouse?

One of the best ways to protect yourself from possible RSI, repetitive strain injury, is to use an ergonomic mouse.  Ergonomic mice are made to be easy on the hand and wrist to not only help prevent injury but also to assist when you already have an injury such as carpal tunnel syndrome. By simply choosing an ergonomic mouse you can eliminate stress and strain and avoid future injury.  Even those who don't think they use the mouse excessively may unknowingly be subjecting themselves to future pain. Ergonomic mice typically provide special protection allowing your wrist to maintain a good position.  Those who already suffer from some RSI will want to use a vertical mouse such as the Renaissance mouse.  This allows for totally different hand movement eliminating the strain that standard mice can bring to an already tender area.  The special Smart Cat Touchpad is another ergonomic mouse option that reduces the pain associated with RSI injuries.
