Stress can be defined as an individual’s physiological response to an internal or external stimulus that triggers the fight or flight response or a hyperarousal neurological reaction. Stress management is a term that denotes scientifically sound techniques that enable or equip an individual to effectively combat this psychological reaction. Stress management techniques are often a combination of physical and psychological strategies.

Stress management training is an art that people use to effectively cope with stress. Most of the stress management help programs and training programs are based on various scientific models of stress management. Most of the techniques of stress management are based on self change and self relaxation. Some of them include autogenic training, cognitive therapy, conflict resolution, physical exercise, and time management. 

Relaxation techniques include measures to combat anger, depression, and anxiety that are usually associated with stress. A relaxation technique is any procedure that helps an individual to relax by effectively reducing the levels of stress and associated problems. Autogenic training, breathing techniques, meditation and visualization techniques.

There are may stress management products available in the market. These include scented lotions that can be used for massage, Aromatic oil and candles that relax the entire environment, stress buster books that tell ways for relaxation and stress reduction, stress-relief music, electronic massage kits, spa, stress relief games and stress-relief bed sheets.

The Toll of Work Stress

Studies have shown that workplace environment with too many conflicting or confusing tasks can lead to stress. Research has shown that costs associated with stress-related health problems like absence due to illness, disability compensations, and alternate skilled employee placement are huge and have a negative impact on employee morale. 75 million working days are lost because of on-job problems and $50 billion are given as compensation for injuries and deaths in organizations. $50 billion is spent on indirect costs like replacement, training. Thus, workplace productivity programs have gained recognition these days.

A lot of stress management coaching programs are available as well. Workplace Productivity Programme (WPPs) have been recently introduced in universities with the sole objective of encouraging workplace reforms that strengthen the students’ capability to manage and implement workplace change. WPPs aim to encourage flexible working relationships, improved productivity and performance.  Success of any such Stress Management Training Programmes or Coaching Programmes depends on identification of factors that are essential for an individual to effectively manage stress and also to design appropriate interventions.  There are stress management and coaching centers that provide stress management programs in the form of lectures, seminars, training audio programs, and video programs.
